Ok, so they haven't got quite that far but belt drive bikes are starting to get a pretty big following. Trek and Spot Brand are among the bicycle companies with belt drives on some bikes as standard and many more have been spotted recently. Belts have a longer life than chains, are lighter, need no lubrication and are smoother. Unfortunately they need an internally geared hub or SS setup and need some way of separating the rear triangle to get a belt on there because you can't take them apart like chains. I'd love one...
