Trance update

I’ve been getting rather annoyed having to peel leaves off the cog and scrape all the mud out from between the chainring and bash guard and Alfine “plastic thingy” so I took them both off, or rather I took the bash guard off and neatly cut off the “plastic thingy”. The bike doesn’t look quite as nice now but it’s lighter and even more mud/leaf friendly. The Alfine itself is still going great and so is everything else on the bike except the headset which needs taking apart and greasing again, definitely don’t think FSA makes the best sealed headsets. Anyway, here’s a few pics of the changes near the start of today’s ride at the back of Wellcross Grange Airstrip...

Looks a bit different without them...
No bash ring...

Genesis is now selling their bikes without the "plastic thingy", I suppose they don't think there is any need for one...

The perfect wet weather- winter- mud and crap bike is a rigid SS. That's why i started riding a SS and its fantastic!

Ride- hose- ride- hose...... :D

Indeed, I’ll get there someday (with my proper SS project)…preferably before autumn!

How do you like the Alfine hub? A friend of mine wants to build up a cross bike with something like that.

The Alfine is great. It only has 8 gears but I’ve found that is all I really need around here, it always feels solid underfoot and still feels very smooth, I actually prefer it to the Rohloff because you don‘t have to break it in and it‘s so much cheaper. Having something like that on a bike for muddy riding is really great, so little maintenance.

If it weren’t for the fact that I’m building up a SS rigid 29er I would keep the Alfine on there permanently but I only need one winter bike and I want to lighten the Trance up with a 1x9 setup for the summer.
